Note 1 to entry: The "multiple carriageway" term can be used to describe a road, road section, road link, or road segment.
Note 2 to entry: The separate carriageways are typically designed for separate traffic for (often multiple) specific operational reasons, such as direction of travel, category of vehicle (e.g. high occupancy vehicle), local versus through travel, etc.
History note: 2025: Revised to change term to "multiple carriageway" rather than "multiple carriageway road segment" to broaden its use and revised definition and note 1 to entry accordingly.
